Pelagic Group, LLC was founded by Eric Buffkin, an entrepreneur and executive with over 20 years of experience in the networking and communications integrated circuits market. Through his executive roles in business development, marketing, and sales with Motorola Semiconductor (now Freescale) and Intellon Corporation he has developed deep experience in the start up and growth phases of new technology ventures - evaluating market opportunities for new technologies, funding new ventures, developing and executing strategic plans for new technology ventures, strategic partnerships, and technology positioning. He has also recruited and lead successful sales and marketing teams in the fast paced startup environment.
Eric has founded or co-founded ventures that span many facets of the wireless and communications industry including Identity Stronghold, the pioneer of the market for physical security for RFID enabled cards; Shorebreak Creations, a developer of applications for mobile devices; Indian River Silicon, a wireless IC development services firm; and two wireless internet service providers: Pelagic Networks, to bring high-speed wireless internet access to marinas; and Surfnride to bring low cost high speed wireless internet to venues around college campuses. Pelagic Networks grew to the largest network of its kind in the state of Florida and was subsequently acquired by Beacon Wi-Fi.
He is also one of the founders of Emergent Growth Fund, a member managed angel investment fund located in Gainesville, Florida. Emergent is focused on early stage companies developing unique, leading-edge products, or proprietary technologies that possess the potential for rapid growth in significant markets.
Eric has also been instrumental in developing high level industry alliances in the home networking industry including the Multimedia over Coax Alliance and the HomePlug Powerline Alliance.
Each of these organizations is recognized worldwide as the primary
reference for industry interoperability specifications in their
respective areas of in-home networking via existing coaxial cable and
power line communications. In each case he brought together industry
leaders across the value chain to establish an organization with a
common goal and vision.
Eric holds a BSEE from the University of Florida and an MBA from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida.
